I was very proud of it and thought, with a successful blog, a platform as the writer for a national magazine, and some persistence, I’d be able to market it well on my own. As an author with more than forty books in print, several of them NYT best sellers, I am use to expressing ideas and emotions when I have a hundred thousand words to play with. But to try and define the team at ASCOT in just a few paragraphs??? That is one tough assignment!
How about: Brilliant, Motivated, Supportive, Professional, Genius. Hmmm, that would just be starters. I would like to start by saying thank you very much, you were a God send, just in time when I was so desperate, when I had spent all my savings in publishing book one in English and Española but, the worse was that I was taken by people who claims to be publicists but they are just charlatans. Bad, mean, greedy people who do not care about others. In my case I was taken by three different so-called publicists. They each charged me more than $20,000 dollars and did nothing for me. In fact, my previous publicist, in the period of 4 months, only got me 4 radio interviews, and it took him a month just to prepare my press release. When I spoke to Trish, I was reluctant to do it, but what she charges for a one-month agreement was like a gift for me, so I gave it a try.
In three days she had my press release ready to kick off for the first distribution of the campaign. Right on the same day of my campaign I received three interview leads. In a three weeks period, I had 21 media leads in which 16 were scheduled, and thanks to Ascot Media, I was on Washington DC’s UNIVISION and KBMT NEWS 12 in Texas. Trish is a God send to help us all. As an author I have explored many media companies and publicists that always promised the world and delivered very little. However unprepared we were for entering the world of publishing, we were even less prepared for the real job of writing—selling the darn book. Like the stacks of books we read about writing, agents, and publishing we launched (belatedly) into studying stacks of books about how to market a book (doesn’t that sound strange). Which is fine of course, if you have loads of time to burn; but we found that having a real job in addition to our budding writing “career” put a damper on how much we could accomplish on our own. Which is another way of saying, we could not accomplish squat. Our publisher (O-Books) recommended Ascot Media: finally, something useful from the publisher.
Ascot has given us the opportunity to promote our book in a manner that does justice to the material we cover: TV, radio, magazines, editorials, reviews, and personal appearances. LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION
As an author who has published nine novels, including three NY Times best-sellers, my biggest challenge with each new book is to generate publicity. What many new authors fail to realize is that today’s book sales affect tomorrow’s publishing deal, and if you are not doing everything you can to generate sales, then there may not be a next book deal. The challenge in hiring an effective publicist is that all of them talk the talk, but very few actually walk the walk. Bigger firms usually delegate tasks, sending out mass e-mailers, then following up by e-mail, sending the author a tally sheet of everything they have “done.” Publicists conveniently confuse activity versus accomplishment, and the results can be awful…and awfully expensive.

My name is Bill Forstchen and I’m the author of over forty books. I will admit up front that I can be considered insane for at least two reasons. And hey, where did she go. . . all the furniture in the house is missing and even the house is gone!

Seriously though. Publishing is one helluva brutal business. We, the authors get into it for a lot of reasons, but I think one common denominator above all else is that we love books, we love writing, and there is the streak of the idealist in us. Publishers? “It’s not personal, it’s business.” And that business rarely considers you the individual. You are just one book of a hundred or more they might market this year. Sure they will have the one or two fair haired favorites that some attention is lavished on, but for most of us, enough copies are run off to turn a profit for them, and that is it. Could your book have been a best seller? Maybe. . . but if the publisher didn’t plan for you to be a best seller, then dream on because it just ain’t gonna happen. I learned these hard truths across twenty five years of slowly crawling up the ladder. My success did come thanks to half a dozen books with a very famous co author and friend, but when it came to titles I still wrote on my own. . . zero effort even though my co authored books won near universal praise for story and style, my co author lavish in his praise of my ability.
A good buddy in the business, a consistent NY Times best seller had been hammering me for years about the main step to success. To hell with what your publishers promise. Most of it is hot air, (he also references what can be found in pastures as well). If you study how the top players made it. . . they had their own publicist. That is the key. Someone who works for you and with you. Someone who has a stake in your success, someone who is a pro who knows marketing, which frankly very few of us authors have a real grasp of.
My friend is right. Long before publication of my latest book “One Second After” early reviewers were telling me that my book was absolutely my best ever, and that beyond that it was an important book with an important message. But yet again, all those early honeymoon promises from the publisher. . .yeah right. I could see the book was heading for oblivion.
Well this time I decided to fight back and fight to win.
